Program Overview

The North American Working Pack Dog Program seeks to recognize the achievement of all dogs, regardless of breed, who are active hiking partners on verifiable hiking trips.


Who Can Participate?

NAWP Dog is open to all breeds of dogs, with or without a known pedigree. A good dog is never the wrong breed.Dogs must be a minimum of 12 months before enrollment.


Follow These Five Rules

Select only dog friendly trails.Abide by all leash laws.
Understand and follow Trail Right of Way.
Tread Lightly; stay on the trail.PACK IT OUT! Don't leave poop unbagged, or bagged on trails.

Do you and your pup enjoy adventures in nature? Looking for a challenge with rewards a the end?North American Working Pack Dog (NAWP Dog) is an all inclusive program designed to give credit to those canine partners who accompany their humans out on the trail and help shoulder the load.No breed is turned away. No need to spay or neuter in order to participate. Simply enroll your dog, select the division that suits your condition and skill level best, and hit the trail!Throughout history, dogs have helped mankind in many situations, from herding to hunting and beyond. NAWP Dog is based on those dogs who served in wars, helping wounded soldiers by carrying first aid supplies, and search and rescue dogs locating those lost in the wilderness.Dogs must carry packs while participating, with divisions progressing from empty to up to 25% of the dogs weight. Packs should contain supplies that would be needed on a long hike or rescue mission; water, first aid, dry towels, food, etc. Pack weight when finishing is expected to be less than when you begin. No dead weight such as rocks are permitted.Log your hikes and earn rewards!

What to Pack

Knowing what to pack can be tricky when you're first getting started. Here are a few things to help you get off to a good start.First, get a reliable scale that with enough surface area that your pack can sit on it. The weight your dog is packing includes the weight of the pack and contents.Always start with the neccessities.Poop Bags (you're required by law to bag and pack it out.)Water for your pup, and a collapsable water bowl.Treats, and food if you're planning on being gone overnight.First aid kitPaw Balm or bootiesDry towelPlastic bags for anything that may become wet.Beyond this, as your dog progresses in strength and conditioning, you may add a dry pair of socks for you, your favorite power bar, flashlight, or any other small items that could be needed on the trail.Visit our facebook for more tips on packing and more.
